An Interesting family history book about Ian’s parents, tracing these pioneering families as they selected properties in the subdivision of the noted Warbreccan Station during the mid to late 1920’s.
These families and many others came to this district in the hope of cheaper land, larger acreages and better opportunities for their sons and daughters. Experience the good seasons and community involvement they enjoyed - but also feel the pain of prolonged droughts, depressed prices, the depression and the start of the 2nd World War. Many of the original selectors literally walked off the land penniless. Read how the Doncon and Lea families experienced all of this and how these two families survived this era. |

The TURNBULL and HYDE Families of DENILIQUIN In writing this book, which is about my wife’s families, I discovered a woman who was born in the top half of Scotland in 1812 yet spent the last 19 years of her life in a dusty, dry and hot Deniliquin; and a bank accountant (Robert Turnbull) who was born in Ireland, yet arrived in Deniliquin in 1877, a year after the Deniliquin to Moama railway started. Equally fascinating are the stories about the Hyde family, including one about Edmund Hyde who had slept in and missed the sailing of his ship along with his luggage and all his possessions, only to discover later that that ship was wrecked off the coast of Victoria with no survivors. These are just a few of the stories that make for interesting reading in this book, about people with pioneering spirit that helped create this great country we live in. |
